DuckTales Vol. 4: Fowl Play

DuckTales Vol. 4: Fowl Play by Alessandro Ferrari

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Ducktales: Fowl Play continues the comic tie-in to the wildly popular reboot TV show. This collection seems to have a theme of “family,” as various members of the McDuck and Duck tribe realize what their family means to them. These comics also continue their nod to classic myths (Scrooge and co. travel to Hades in one story), as well as pop cultural references. My favorite in-joke was in “Horror in the Highlands.” A rumor is circulating that Scrooge is not really Scottish so he returns to his homeland to prove them wrong. Whilst there, a bunch of town folks approach him, labeling him an impostor. In one panel, a woman cries, “I’ll bet his accent’s fake, too!” To which another replies, “Aye, sounds like some actor from TV! Like he plays a Doctor or a Detective, or something!” This of course, is a nod to David Tennant, who voices Scrooge McDuck in the reboot. His most famous roles to date are as the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who and as Detective Inspector Alec Hardy in Broadchurch. Needless to say, I busted a gut.

But that’s been the appeal of both the reboot series and the comics all along. They’re family-friendly enough for youngsters to enjoy it, but they’re savvy and snarky enough for adults to get a kick out of them too. I’m marking it down yet again for the tiny print.
